Elves are apparently a problem for Icelanders. I read an article a few years ago where the foreman on a crew building a new road between two small towns called in someone on a professional level to "appease the elves" in the area that were supposedly causing problems to the construction. After which the construction continued without a problem. The article mentioned a poll at the time where 40 percent of the people polled believed in elves, 40 percent didn't, and 20 percent were unsure of whether or not elves existed, so they might as well go through the process of appeasement.

I have another possible explanation (as much as I wish to believe in mischeivous elves). Perhaps the elf-whisperers and the local union had a thing going on the side....

As a kid, I had imaginary fairies instead of imaginary friends. But even I knew that they could escape out of the way of bulldozers!
