New Job! New Job! New Job! [Feb. 25th, 2008|07:25 pm]
[Current Mood |excitedexcited]

I got a new job. The last little hurdle cleared today (drug/background check), so I went ahead and gave my two weeks notice. I'll be working at Corning as a process engineer developing...fiber optic cable. So...not a huge move in terms of the basic physical theory behind the product, but they're glass fibers rather than polymer ones, so it actually will be significantly different from what I'm doing right now. It'll also pay a good deal more (about 30% more when you add in year end bonuses and the 401k matching+pension plan).

Also, it's in Wilmington, NC, so if anyone wants to visit me on the south east coast of North Carolina, you're more than welcome to come.

LOLCATS! [Apr. 30th, 2007|10:14 pm]
[Current Mood |chipperchipper]

Well, that episode of 24 was a waste.

I have nothing new to say except that for some reason I'm inordinately amused by the lolcats phenomenon.

Especially MONORAIL CAT.

On Netflix's New Feature: Watch Now [Mar. 1st, 2007|11:03 pm]
[Current Mood |impressedimpressed]

I tried out the new Watch Now feature on Netflix tonight. Almost everything about it was awesome. The interface was easy to use and install, the movie loaded quickly, and best of all it was free with my subscription. Apparently you get an hour's worth of streaming for every dollar you pay in subscription fees. I currently have the 1 movie at a time plan for $10, so I get 10 hours worth of streaming per month. The picture/sound quality was decent, nothing spectacular, but better than YouTube.

There are some issues though. It only plays in Internet Explorer, and I guess it doesn't work with Macs either (but no one cares about Apple users). the bigger problem is that the selection of streamable movies isn't spectacular. I watched Real Genius, since I hadn't seen it, and apparently since I'm an engineer I should have watched it years ago. It was good, I guess. But beyond that, it doesn't look like there's much there I want to watch that I haven't seen already. I've seen the good ones, and I don't want to waste my time with the shitty ones.

So, as soon as they broaden the selection a bit, I'll be super on board with it. But hey, it's not like I'm paying extra for it.

In Case You Haven't Noticed, I Don't Really Care About LJ Anymore [Feb. 13th, 2007|08:55 pm]
[Current Mood |fullfull]

The other day I had the song Hakuna Matata stuck in my head. From there the lyrics morphed into "spinach frittata," which made me want to make that particular dish. I finally got around to making it today and man was it tasty.

Implausibility In The Realm Of 24 [Feb. 5th, 2007|10:10 pm]
[Current Mood |indifferentmeme-y]

While browsing Fark this morning, I saw an article that made me almost make a post about a Gingrich/Norris ticket in 2008 but decided against it.

Then I watched 24 tonight and realized that if Powers Boothe can be Vice President, then Chuck Norris would have no trouble roundhouse kicking his way into office. Seriously though, I can believe James Cromwell as the evil father, but Powers Fucking Booth as VP? I stopped suspending my disbelief right there.

Ok, I know that I quit the 24 bandwagon halfway through Day 2, but I went ahead and started Tivoing it. Which is definitely the way to go (especially if you've got 4 straight hours of it). And wow. Neato. I'm an idiot for skipping all those years in between. Oh well, I'm hooked again. Time for bed.

X-mas Wish List [Dec. 10th, 2006|02:28 pm]
[Current Mood |lethargiclethargic]

I know I've been saying that I would post a Christmas list for a while now, but I've been procrastinating a bit. Sorry. The problem is that I just can't really think of anything I want.

Here's a few things:

-A new digital camera (The main feature I want in it is size. Something small with decent resolution. Nothing too fancy though.)
-The Thin Man collection on DVD (I love me some gin-soaked 30's detective comedies)
-Guitar Hero 2 for PS2

That's all I can really think of right now. I need a new set of cookware too, but I don't really want to try to lug a 14 piece set of pots and pans on the plane with me back to Cleveland.
